What is NLP ?

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It describes the three components that comprise our experience: neurology, language and programming. The neurology or neuro part of NLP refers to the function of the brain's thought wave and how it regulates our body's functions. The language or linguistic component refers to how we communicate with other people and the programming component is how we perceive our individual realities. Neuro-Linguistic Programming explains how the mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) work together and how it effects our body and behaviour (programming).

NLP is about understanding how and why we think, speak and do the things that we do. This understanding then can be applied to producing and achieving attainable goals with excellent results in a relatively short period of time.

History of NLP

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a relatively new 'human technology'. It was founded in California by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in 1972. Since its founding and through the skills of many talented people it continues to evolve . NLP first started when Richard Bandler and John Grinder sought out to find out how people excelled. In a way, it started as a 'study of excellence'. They started by studying three people who were having exceptional success in their specific fields. The first three models were Milton Erickson, a leading physician and one of the first to use hypnotherapy in the medical field; Virginia Satir, a family therapist that had incredible success with cases that other therapists wouldn't touch; and Fritz Perls, famed psychotherapist and father of the gestalt therapy.

During their study, Richard Bandler and John Grinder discovered various language patterns now referred to as the Milton model / Meta model. They also discovered that every person experiences reality differently; thus, no one truly experiences reality, only their own representation of reality through their own senses (4tuples). Utilizing this information they were able to duplicate the actions and results of those whom they studied. This eventually became what is known today as modeling.

Bandler and Grinder also began to observe similarities between individuals' thought patterns and this eventually lead to some very effective strategies such as the fast phobia theatre, the swish pattern, the Godiva chocolate pattern to name a few.

Through their work and the work of many others, NLP is naturally evolving and fast becoming the most effective tool for personal change.

How does NLP work with regards to personal change?

The easiest way to explain change with NLP is

1. build a well formed goal.
2. build a present state representation.
3. conduct congruency check
4. create a strategy or utilize an NLP strategy to cut the new neuro pathway.
5. strengthen and test!

The above is only a basic outline as to how 'change' is conducted through NLP. It can and sometimes must change depending on the individual.
